James is a red mix-traffic tender engine.

Bio

James is the No. 5 engine. On his first day, he was painted black and faulty brakes. Because of this, James was involved in a bad accident, but was later saved by Thomas. James often likes to boast about his red paintwork.

Trivia

• James' HO Scale model has several errors regarding the way his original model is designed.
  • Part of his smokebox support is unpainted.
  • All of his wheels, and axle boxes are painted in a light grey instead of black.
  • The slope where his filler cap should be is black instead of red.
  • The brake pipe on the back of his tender is on the wrong side of the dummy coupling hook.
    • Also, his dummy coupling hooks are grey instead of being black with red bases.
• James' HO Scale model has several errors regarding the way his redesigned model is designed.

• A representative from Bachmann confirmed that in 2015 the errors on the HO Scale James model will be rectified. However, it took until November of 2017 for the redesigned version to finally receive an updated stock photo.
  • The updated version of James started to show up for purchase the following month.
  • The Item Number remains the same, as it just replaces the old version.
• James' HO scale model is the first engine to be purposely visually re-designed by Bachmann.
  • An example of an accidental visual change is the reoccurring error of Diesel's buffers.
    • Other characters have had changes done to their models, but they were done to simplify production/remove unnecessary pieces, or to bring the model up to Bachmann's current standard. They were not worth having Bachmann point them out.
      • An example of the removal of pieces is; Percy's sandboxes being changed from being the same piece as his running board, with separate fitted top caps, to having the sandboxes being one, separate fitted piece all-together.
      • An example of bringing up the standard is; Thomas' interior workings were completely redone to remove most of the gearbox, resulting in less space used.
• HO Scale James, Percy, and Thomas are the only models produced that lack front couplings.
• James' model features a safety valve, as his Seasons 1-Thomas & the Magic Railroad model has.
